MASSAGE THERAPY

BOOK ONLINE NOW!
What is Registered Massage Therapy?
Massage Therapy treatment has a therapeutic effect on the body and optimizes health and well-being by acting on the muscular, nervous and circulatory systems. Physical function can be developed, maintained and improved while dysfunction, pain and the effects of stress can be relieved or prevented through the use of Massage Therapy.

Keaton Basso is a Registered Massage Therapist in the province of Ontario. RMT's are regulated health care practitioners and must adhere to the standards of practice set out by the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario whose mandate is to oversee the profession and protect the public at the highest standard.

Treatment Process
Before a treatment your Massage Therapist will propose a personalized treatment plan based on an initial assessment and health history. The assessment consists of various tests to determine the condition of your muscles and joints. Any personal and health information you provide to your Massage Therapist is completely confidential.

Your Massage Therapist must also obtain your consent to work on any part of your body, regardless of whether you are fully clothed, fully or partially covered with sheets or blankets. Your privacy will always be respected and you may withdraw your consent for treatment at any time.

Various specialized movements of the hands, over the skin or clothes, make up the Massage Therapy treatment. The Massage Therapist will work with your level of pain tolerance during the treatment and the treatment can be stopped at any time should the treatment become uncomfortable.

Types of Treatment

Therapeutic Massage
Therapeutic treatments help with reducing pain or inflammation from acute, sub-acute and chronic injuries. Most non-traumatic injuries are caused by muscle imbalances in the body. The use of massage therapy can restore the natural length and strength of the muscle while promoting healing. In addition, techniques/modalities such as cupping, percussion, and lymphatic drainage can help enhance results.

Sports Massage
Sports massage is a deep tissue massage to prevent injury from sports, enhance recovery and treat chronic or acute injuries. Pre and post-event sports massage therapy occurs directly before or after training or competition to help the body perform at its peak and recover efficiently. In addition, stretching may be incorporated and can enhance the effect of a sports massage session.

Relaxation
Relaxation massage is a medium or light pressure massage that will remove the tightness from tired muscles and promote a feeling of relaxation. Helps to reduce stress, anxiety and enhance wellness.

Additional Treatment Modalities to Enhance Treatment
Normatec Compression Therapy

Compression therapy increases blood flow, which delivers nutrients to your muscles and removes waste like lactic acid. That's why active recovery (like stretching and walking) is so much better than passive recovery (doing nothing). Sessions vary from 10-25 min and can be integrated into your treatment or as a standalone.
Your circulatory system delivers oxygen, nutrients and hormones to every cell in your body. Simultaneously, Normatec Compression therapy removes metabolic wastes such as carbon dioxide and lactic acid, effectively flushing your system of toxins.

The idea behind compression therapy is that by increasing blood flow to specific parts of the body, and encouraging your body to deliver more oxygen and nutrients to those areas, you can speed up recovery, relieve pain and improve athletic performance.
  • Reducing swelling and inflammation
  • Speeding up muscle recovery
  • Preventing delayed-onset muscle soreness
  • Relieving muscle pain
  • Improving athletic performance
  • Removing exercise-related wastes, like lactic acid
  • Decreasing muscle fatigue

Theragun Percussive Therapy
Percussive therapy is a form of soft tissue manipulation intended to reduce muscle soreness and increase range of motion. It is a deep muscle treatment that delivers rapid and long vertical strokes into the muscle, causing neuromuscular response.

The Theragun is a massage device that looks (and sounds) like a power drill that uses percussive massage therapy to treat muscle soreness and relieve pain. The tool has increasingly been used by (and found effective for) everyone – from professional athletes to weekend warriors and everyone in between.

Theragun was created by Dr. Jason, a chiropractor by profession, after he suffered a personal injury. He was looking for a way to treat himself between his regular treatments with the aim of getting better faster. The Theragun is designed to “talk with the nervous system” using three key combinations: Amplitude, Frequency and Torque.

Benefits include:
  • Reduce pain
  • Increase blood flow
  • Break up scar tissue
  • Decrease lactic acid
  • Release muscle spasms
  • Increase lymphatic flow
  • Improve range of motion
  • Improve body awareness
  • Make recovery more efficient and effective

Cupping Therapy
Cupping uses a plastic cup and suction to pull an area of skin into a suction that decompresses muscles and connective tissue. This promotes blood flow to the compromised area, enhances circulation and helps to increase the body's own healing processes — almost like a backward deep tissue massage.  Cupping helps with pain,  inflammation, blood flow, relaxation and well-being.

Keaton uses it as an added modality with his massage therapy sessions to help decrease muscle tension and spasms, while also detoxifying tissues and helping with recovery.

Will My Insurance Cover Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy is not covered by OHIP, but many private insurance companies cover treatment from a Massage Therapist as part of their extended healthcare plans. Please consult your policy. Otherwise, you can deduct the services of a Registered Massage Therapist as a medical expense on line 331 of your tax return. Please refer to the Canada Revenue Agency website for details on how much you are able to claim for Massage Therapy services.
